PASSION PLAY FOR EASTER (article first published : 1999-11-24)

In 1952. Durban first presented its now-famous Durban Passion Play at the Greyville Race Course. It is the only city in the world with rights to the play which belongs to the people of Oberammergau in Western Germany. When Bishop Dennis Hurley first requested permission to stage their production, Passion of our Lord, the only condition was that the performance should be open to non-segregated audiences.

Since then, the play has been staged in Durban every five years and the Durban Catholic Players Guild is gearing itself up to face the first production of the new millennium. This is to take place at Easter and part of the pre-production is a fund-raising campaign, Passion Play 2000. For further information, phone Allan Booth of the DCPG on 082 333-3337.
