UNCUT – THE PENIS MONOLOGUES (article first published : 2003-08-12)

In an offbeat response to the acclaimed and controversial Vagina Monologues, Copy Dog presents a sensational new take in Uncut – The Penis Monologues. Directed by multi-award winning director Garth Anderson, this newly scripted adults-only show stars Clinton Marius in a raunchy, entertaining and challenging look at male sexuality - and what being a man means in the 21st century!

The contentious script includes invited contributions from a number of high-profile local writers. It sheds light on seldom-discussed issues such as circumcision, chauvinism, homophobia, impotence, penis enlargement, sex changes, erective dysfunction, among others.

“Men are as incapable of relating to women or each other as they were a century ago,” says Clinton. “We are still at war. On one side we are faced with insensitive, macho bullies and on the other, men who cry during art movies and are of no use around the house. And under no circumstances should two men share an umbrella.”

Beneath its entertaining façade the show puts forward much material for serious consideration and debate. This outspoken production includes nudity and is not recommended for the faint-hearted. “I hope the air-conditioner in the theatre is not too cold,” jokes Clinton.

The varied collection of monologues is frank, sexy and often outrageous. Its publicity poster, with the inclusion of the word ‘penis’, finally escaped banning this week after extensive deliberation by the civic authorities, but may not be erected outside schools, being an adults only show.

Booking is now open at Computicket for Uncut – The Penis Monologues, which runs at the University of Natal’s Square Space Theatre in Durban from September 1 to 21. Performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 19h30, and Sundays at 18h30. Tickets R50. To book call 011-340 8000 or log onto www.computicket.com. For enquiries call 031 201 3739.
