AMAGAMA AMATHATU (article first published : 2003-07-31)

Many businesses are taking steps to educate their staff about the HIV/AIDS pandemic by making reading material available and employing counselors to handle HIV/AIDS related queries and problems in their organizations. Arlecchino’s Productions is addressing this problem by presenting an AIDS awareness play, called Amagama Amathatu (a popular colloquial expression meaning “a three letter word” - H.I.V.) to staff of companies throughout KZN.

The characters in the play are easily identifiable: youngsters, grannies, thugs and good-time girls, wives, schoolgirls and businessmen, artists and sportsmen. Scenarios are presented that exist in the communities of affected people and allow the audience to absorb the information and learn about the many aspects of the disease without fear, in an entertaining true-to-life manner.

Amagama Amathatu is a vibrant and exciting production geared towards changing attitudes and empowering people to make the right choices to ensure their futures. The play is performed in Zulu and English by two well-known local actors Kaseran Pillay and Mpume Mthombene, plus a “cast” of ten beautifully hand-crafted rod puppets created by ceramic artist Wendy Nell.

The production urges firms or industries to book the 50-minute play to be presented on site to a maximum of 200 people per show. An open-forum discussion takes place afterwards and booklets on HIV/AIDS are available. More details from Vital Media Link on 082 412 5885 or dawn.spencer@eastcoast.co.za
