GLASS ROOTS (article first published : 2003-07-21)

Greg King's vibrant KickstArt Theatre Company, now permanently based at Kwasuka Theatre is about to rock Durban with a brand new production of Fiona Coyne's hit comedy Glass Roots. Fiona Coyne is about to become a household name as the presenter of South Africa's Weakest Link. Her biting wit is ever-present and razor-sharp in this fabulous comedy of bad manners

Glass Roots premiered at the Grahamstown festival in 2000, and is by far and away one of the fall-about funniest and most successful South African plays in recent years. Jocelyn has a lot on her plate; she has to manage her new ad agency, her partner and would-be lover, Vuyo, a very short temper and a cocaine habit, and a very reluctant actress for her first big ad.

Their brief is to find "the quintessential South African" for a new beer commercial. Her sights are set on Verity Stevens, a salt-of-the-earth, easy-talking coloured woman, but she's not going to come that easily. To make matters completely impossible, on the night before the big presentation, Jos's talkaholic mother, Mona, a middle-class white South African of the old order, with a Mainstay habit, descends on Cape Town for a visit, and all hell breaks loose...

Designed and directed by Greg King, Glass Roots will also officially launch KickstArt's tenure at Kwasuka. The production opens on August 26 with performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00, matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 14h30. Tickets R60 booked through Greg on 083 544 2006 or at the door. (R45 student and pensioner concession available on request).
