FOREIGN AIDS (article first published : 2003-07-20)

HIVAN (The Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking) facilitates multi-sectoral partnerships aimed at addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis in KZN and beyond. The HIVAN campaign entitled Artists’ Action Around AIDS includes a visual arts exhibition to be held at the Durban Art Gallery from July 23 to August 15.

It will also feature one performance by Pieter-Dirk Uys of his acclaimed show Foreign Aids on August 4 at 19h00 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

Foreign Aids attracted rave reviews from TIME magazine, the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, The Guardian, London Observer, De Telegraaf and Volkskrant. Pieter-Dirk Uys illustrates how the minefield of South Africa’s social struggle has moved from politics to sex - and how AIDS would succeed where apartheid failed. Through the characters of Evita's sister Bambi Kellermann, Dr Thaboo Macbeki, Nelson Mandela and other icons and “ai-konas”, Uys reflects on and expresses the greatest fear facing the world, and specifically South Africa - HIV/AIDS – in a powerful production that is both moving and familiar.

Pieter-Dirk Uys’s appearance will be preceded by the Sinikithemba Choir.

Also forming part of the HIVAN campaign is a Developmental Workshop to be run at the University of Natal on August 4.

Tickets R30 at Computicket. Proceeds will be donated to the Sinikithemba Choir.

The HIVAN Centre facilitates numerous multi-disciplinary research and intervention programmes, operates the University’s Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit, offers a comprehensive on-line database of HIV/AIDS resources and initiatives, and sponsors HIV/AIDS-related Fellowship and Job Shadow programmes.
