AMAGAMA AMATHATU (article first published : 2003-06-21)

Madcaps Creative Theatre Company is touring schools in disadvantaged areas from June to September with their latest educational production, an AIDS awareness presentation entitled Amagama Amathatu which is a popular euphemism for HIV.

The play is performed by two well-known local actors, Kaseran Pillay and Mpume Mthombene, plus a ‘cast’ of ten large hand-crafted rod puppets created by Wendy Nell. The script is in Zulu and English.

Taking real-life stories as its inspiration, Amagama Amathatu considers the many issues that arise in the communities as a result of AIDS. These include financial problems, child-headed households and loss of family breadwinners. It shows the various attitudes towards the disease and the diseased.

Amagama Amathatu is presented in a lively dramatic way, with song and rap, interspersed with the moving life-dramas. The wide range of characters is easily identifiable. This vibrant and exciting production is geared towards changing attitudes and empowering young people to make the right choices to ensure their futures.

The project is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, which also supported Madcaps with their recent tour of schools in the South Industrial Basin with their environmental awareness comedy The Green Hats.

Amagama Amathatu is also available for schools that do not qualify for funded performances, where learners will be asked to contribute a nominal sum. More information from Dawn Spencer on 031 2061575 or 082 412 5885.
