EAST COAST RADIO HAHA COMEDY SHOW (article first published : 2003-06-16)

Opening on June 24, The East Coast Radio HAHA Comedy Show promises to be bigger and better than ever before and will feature three world-class international acts and four of South African’s funniest funny-men.

Gavin Meiring, programme manager of East Coast Radio, says: “East Coast Radio believes that the best way to make people happy is to make them laugh and we are very proud to be able to continue to bring the Ha Ha to Durban. To have seen it grown to where international comedians have become a regular feature on the festival along with the best local acts around is a tribute to the East Coasters that have supported the event over the last four years. I am confident that this years line up is going leave the audience crying with laughter.”

Producers NEAR Entertainment have been fortunate to land Junior Simpson as this year’s MC. One of Britain’s hottest comedic talents, he has worked extensively alongside the likes of Ali G, Rolf Harris and Jo Brand and has performed all over the world including Australia, The Far East, Canada and Europe. He also has his own game show, In the Dark with Junior Simpson, on BBC’s Channel 5.

Winner of the Time Out Comedy Award, Canadian comic Phil Nichol offers crazy hilarity and can best be described as a Tasmanian devil with a guitar. With superb improvisational skills, he presents wickedly funny songs and was a major hit at last year’s Smirnoff Comedy Festival.

Inder Manocha has been making a name for himself on the British comedy circuit as “the guy” that doesn’t shy away from discrimination, immigration and the truth behind Bollywood movies. Since leaving his studies at Oxford University to pursue his lifelong passion for comedy, Inder has been a finalist in several prestigious comedy shootouts, has toured extensively around Britain and Scottland and is fast becoming one of Britain’s stars.

Making up the South African contingent are South Africa’s only comedic ventriloquist Conrad Koch; Kagiso Lediga who won the “MTN-ice People’s Choice Award” at last year’s Smirnoff Comedy festival and is a frequent guest and contributor to the Phat Joe Show, and Joey Rasdien the wild haired bespectacled Muslin comic who makes his debut in Durban.

Also appearing will be Durban’s Cokey Falkow, a veteran of the Durban comedy circuit and fresh from Cape Town’s action movie sets.

The East Coast Radio HAHA Comedy Show runs in the Playhouse Opera from June 24 to July 6. Book at Computicket (strictly no under 16’s allowed). More information from 021 461 7570.
