GEORGY PORGY (article first published : 2003-06-11)

Georgy Porgy, one of Roald Dahl’s most celebrated comic characters, takes to the boards this month at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in a new South African staging presented and performed by Durban actor Thomie Holtzhausen and directed by Peter Court.

Georgy Porgy heralds the hysterical history of George whose childhood - and especially his memories and experiences of his rather “liberal” mother - have made him exactly who he is today – a platteland vicar in a small, female-dominated parish in the Free State.

George, has an idiosyncratic view of the opposite sex. He considers women beautiful, aloof and alluring but they reside upon pedestals high above common man. Women are also curious, very curious… especially about George’s vows of abstinence and celibacy. This they find a fascinating mystery… and what woman can resist a good mystery?

Join the fun and laughter as George tells his tale of sexual woe in this one-man theatrical tour de force directed by one of Durban’s best-known stage directors.

Himself an ATKV Best Director Award-winner, Holtzhauzen’s return to Grahamstown follows his previous festival appearances there in Le Jon, Kyk my Pop, Oom! and Stereotypes in Stereo.

Georgy Porgy will be performed at the Victoria Gymnasium in Grahamstown on June 27 at 12h30; June 28 at 14h30; June 30 at 16h00; July 1 at 19h30; July 3 at 12h00; and July 4 at 22h00.

Tickets R50. Booking now open at Computicket outlets nationwide, call 011-340 6000 or 083 915 8000, and also on the National Arts Festival’s website, http://www.nafest.co.za
