ANIMAL FARM MUSICAL (article first published : 2003-04-11)

Well–known Durban director Jerry Pooe and his Eager Artists return to the Playhouse Theatre with Animal Farm Musical. The show is open to learners and the public from April 29 to May 18.

George Orwell’s prophetic Animal Farm is one of the most telling novels of our time and the issues contained therein are relevant to the whole world. In his adaptation, Jerry Pooe looks at the relevance of the story of the barnyard animals linked to South African politics. He poses the observation of how soon leaders forget their beliefs of revolution once they are in power.

This is the story of fighting for freedom, greed of people in power and the hope of ordinary citizens. The story unfolds though music and dance.

The musical is set in Barn Yard and introduced by human characters from South Africa. It then changes to the animalss perspective where they share their hopes, frustrations, disappointments and realities in fighting for freedom that result to confusion of what is freedom.

The show includes 12 talented and vibrant Eager Artists actors who recently finished their theatre season of Mine Ghosts at the Playhouse last month.

The show is open to the public and runs from Tuesday to Sunday. Evening shows at 19h00 with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 15h00. Book at Computicket.

More information from Smangele Mbeje on 031 305 1624 or 083 5111 407 or email mbejesmaxi@absamail.co.za

Eager Artists acknowledge the support of The Playhouse Company and the National Arts Council.
