THE JUNGLE BOOK (article first published : 2003-03-24)

Hennie Baird, well known to Durban theatre audiences for his magic show as Hendini, is currently appearing in The Jungle Book as the evil tiger Shere Khan, the swinging King Louis and Colonel Hathi. The production is running at The Peoples Theatre at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre Complex until April 21.

Directed by Jill Girard and Keith Smith with costumes by Linda Smith and stage design by Marius Boshoff, The Jungle Book features Francois Theron as the loveable Baloo, Sibusiso Mamba as Bagheera and Botha Enslin as Kaa the hypnotic snake Mrs Louis and Mrs Hathi.

The Jungle Book – a story made famous by Rudyard Kipling, Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1907 has become one of the best loved stories of all times. It is a classic animal tale and has entertained children since the story was first published in 1893. It tells the story of the orphan Mowgli – the man cub whom wolves bring up. He has to journey to the “man village”, meeting many animals on his journey.
