THE SQUARE SPACE THEATRE (article first published : 2003-03-24)

The Square Space Theatre is housed in the University of Natal’s Drama and Performance Studies Programme. Since 1972, it has provided a space for students to engage with the challenges of working in a professional theatre environment. More recently, however, professional artists have increasingly made use of this intimate performance space to present a range of award-winning productions that have contributed to the ever-growing performing arts scene in Durban.

“The theatre has recently acquired the administrative services of two highly experienced graduates, Clare Craighead and Wesley Maherry,” says Professor Mervyn McMurtry, programme director of the Drama and Performance Studies. “They will work in conjunction with the Chief Technician, Rogers Ganesan, and myself to provide a professional service to both artists and patrons, ensuring that the needs of all who use the Square Space theatre are fulfilled.”

Clare Craighead graduated her BA (Honours) cum laude and is currently serving as Company Manager to two of Durban’s top contemporary dance companies, Flatfoot Dance Company and Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre. Wesley Maherry also graduated his BA (Honours) cum laude and is a performer for both Flatfoot Dance Company and the Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Company.

“The unique environment of the Square Space Theatre can be adapted in a variety of ways, depending on the type of production or installation that is to be presented,” say Clare and Weley. “As more companies make use of the theatre, we will continue to improve and upgrade the facilities that are on offer.”

The Square Space seats 120 in the round or 90 seats in the end-on. The acting area is 6080mm square. When the end-on configuration is used and once seats have been removed on the North Side, an added performance space of 2535 x 6080mm is made. Ceiling height is 2980mm. There is a coffee bar and tiket office and an awning covers an open-air foyer with two display boards. Technical and FOH staff is available at additional cost.

For more information, prices or enquiries to book the theatre, contact Wesley on 082 950 8188 or Clare on 082 875 6065.
