STEVEN STEAD (article first published : 2003-03-23)

News from FNB Vita award winning actor Steven Stead (Best Actor for Themi Venturas’s Hamlet) from a “wet, freezing Bilbao” where he was directing an Italian opera with a mostly Spanish cast - which also included two Russians and an American - in French! As he said, it was “proving to be an interesting experience...”

Steven is due back in May to act in a play that he is co-producing with Greg King´s KickstArt theatre company. He will co-star with Belinda Harward who will be returning from London for the production.

The play is called Run to Ground and it opens at Kwasuka Theatre on June 2 for a three week run. It’s an English translation of Reza de Wet´s acclaimed Afrikaans drama Diepe Grond which Steven describes as “a darkly funny, disquieting piece of African Gothic”.

Set on a derelict farm in the Free State or Karoo, an orphaned brother and sister live a bizarre life looked after by their old Xhosa nanny. A small-time lawyer arrives on the farm, intent upon getting the pair to rehabilitate in the city and leave their dislocated life on their parents’ farm. This is something they are not at all happy about doing. Says Steven: “It´s terrible what can happen when your car´s alternator goes mysteriously missing and the nearest telephone is a ten mile walk away over the veld...”

Steven is very excited about the project, not having acted since Hamlet and is looking forward to be working at home again, with Belinda and Greg.
