SAMSON AND DELILAH (article first published : 2003-03-22)

An all-Durban cast directed by radio theatre veteran Henry Diffenthal will be broadcast on Radio Today’s Vintage Radio on April 3.

Samson and Delilah was originally written as a ten minute play for a BBC regional radio competition in which it was highly commended.

The author Dorothy Carter emigrated to South Africa with her family in 1971. A keen writer from a very early age, she never got around to sending anything for publication. Tragedy struck after just a few months of living in South Africa when her husband was hit by a truck whilst walking to work. The family, however, decided against returning to the UK and Dorothy remarried in 1973.

Some years later her son, Les, got hold of the script of Samson and Delilah and decided that it could easily be turned into a 30-minute Springbok Radio style play. An avid listener to Springbok Radio, he wrote his first successful radio play in his early teens. This was broadcast on Tuesday Theatre.

Les found his first full time radio job with Radio Bophuthatswana in Mmabatho and went on to work for 702 Music Radio in Johannesburg for a short time before leaving South Africa in 1984. Today he works as a freelance scriptwriter, radio presenter and voice-over artist in the North East of England.

"Samson and Delilah had been lurking at the bottom of my briefcase for months, so I decided to have a quick read one lunch break", he says. "It gave me a bit of a lump in my throat when I reached the end, which I think is a good sign that a story works!"

"Samson and Delilah features Jodi Black, Catherynn Dunstan, Margaret Logan, Tom Read, Roger Service, Caroline Smart and Peter Gardner. The play will be broadcast on April 3 at 19h00 on the programme Vintage Radio on Radio Today on 1485AM.

Good news from Vintage Radio’s Frans Erasmus is that Radio Today is negotiating with the IBA regarding extending their signal. “We hope they succeed so that many more old time Springbok listeners can join us,” he says. “More good news is that Toshiba is going to fund a further 12 new radio dramas this year for Vintage Radio.”
