HAMLET AT SNEDDON AND HILTON (article first published : 2003-02-22)

Award-winning director Garth Anderson and his busy Actors Co-Operative theatre company are currently presenting a production of Shakespeare’s well-known tragedy Hamlet.

Performing the title role is Neil Coppen, recently seen in Red Coat Tales over the festive season and in Far from the Madding Crowd earlier in the year.

Well-known for her roles in radio drama, Margaret Logan has been enticed back onto the stage to pay Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Jodi Black is the gentle Ophelia, Rowan Bartlett has the coveted part of Polonius and Joel Zuma is The Player King. Making a special return from Johannesburg to appear in the show will be Bryan Hiles as the philosophic, gentlemanly Horatio.

Garth Anderson will play Claudius, Hamlet’s charismatic uncle, who seems to be hiding a past and whose relationship with Gertrude is called to question by Hamlet. No stranger to Shakespeare, he directed last year’s Macbeth and Othello and was also seen as Malvolio in Ralph Lawson’s Twelfth Night.

Also in the cast are Edward Berridge, Oded Rouche, Eryl Raymond, Dean Roberts and David Cowley.

Hamlet runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre until March 7 with public performances at 19h00 on February 28 and March 7. The production then moves to Hilton College Theatre from March 10 to 14 with one public performance on March 13 at 19h30. Bookings can be made by phoning Doreen on 033 343 0126.
