DECADENCE (article first published : 2003-02-21)

The provocative, sensational and critically acclaimed Decadence comes to The Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from February 25 until March 9.

Featuring two of the industry’s finest performers – Fiona Ramsay and Michael Richard - Decadence is delightfully saucy, deliciously bawdy and colourfully risqué. It is a snappy, breathtaking, pacy two-hander comedy by brilliant British playwright Steven Berkoff.

This biting and hilarious play showcases Berkoff at his scathing and withering best. The play examines both the British wealthy and working classes and exposes the vulgarity, depravity and excesses of both. It deals with a pair of adulterous lovers who revel in their sexual decadence but present it with a brittle and sophisticated style that makes the production utterly riveting. The sex is implied rather than physically portrayed – and no-one takes their clothes off!

Two of South Africa’s most respected and admired actors both with a host of impressive productions to their names, Fiona and Michael have won awards for their respective performances in Decadence. Michael balances stage-acting with his busy radio and TV schedule. Fiona hosts Art of the Matter, SAfm’s radio programme dedicated to the arts on Saturday mornings.

Decadence was originally directed and designed by Fred Abrahamse and has been redirected by Graham Hopkins. It has enjoyed three major seasons over three decades – first in 1982, then 1992 and again last year where it played at the Liberty Theatre on the Square and the Natal Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

Decadence is suitable for adult audiences only and contains explicit scenes and language. It is being staged from 25 February until 9 March at the Catalina Theatre. Performances Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 and Sundays at 18h00. Book on 031 305 6889.
