GREEN MAMBA RETURNS! (article first published : 2002-11-22)

Homegrown comedy hit Green Mamba featuring Ben Voss and John van de Ruit will be the first production to be staged at Durbanís newest theatre, The Catalina in the new Wilsonís Wharf off the Esplanade.

Green Mamba premiered at the 2002 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, playing to packed houses and critical acclaim. Its Durban run was no different, as local audiences crammed into the Square Space Theatre for a sellout five-week season.

Such was the demand for tickets that Green Mamba returns once again to the city, this time to open the Catalina Theatre on Wilsonís Wharf in December. The brainchild of director and producer Themi Venturas, this new 180 seat venue is set to become one of Durbanís premier theatres and the Green Mamba team is delighted to be christening this stunning harbour site. This will be the last chance for local audiences to catch the show before it embarks on a National Tour.

Green Mamba is a venomous satirical comedy, taking a hilarious look at the trials and tribulations of life in the new South Africa. Through a series of 16 ingenious sketches, FNB VITA award winners Ben Voss and John van de Ruit take the audience on a sidesplitting journey through a day in the life of this weird and wonderful country.

From an in depth study of the refined art of car-guarding, to a savage send up of the Big Brother Household, the humour runs thick and fast. Thereís a new look at the Anglo Zulu War and a Nandos advert with a difference.

Green Mamba is directed by Greig Coetzee (White Men With Weapons, Breasts) and co-written by John van de Ruit and Ben Voss.

After the season at The Catalina, the show embarks on a national tour from February 2003, taking in the Hilton College Theatre (February 13-14); Hexagon Theatre Pietermaritzburg (February 24 to March 1); Playhouse, East London (March 4 to 11); Little Theatre, Port Elizabeth (March 15 to 29); Barnyard Theatres - Mossel Bay/Plettenberg Bay (April 1 to 10); National Arts Festival, Grahamstown (June 27 to July 6); Baxter Theatre, Cape Town (August 11 to September 6).

Green Mamba will run at the Catalina Theatre from December 10 to January 5. Shows Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Fridays at 21h00) with two sundowner shows at 18h00 on Friday and Sunday. Bookings on 031 201 9242 or 083 555 1885. More information from www.thunderdog.co.za
