STEEL MAGNOLIAS (article first published : 2002-11-22)

Greg King’s KickstArt Theatre Company has just secured the rights for a new production of the heart-warming comedy-drama Steel Magnolias to be staged at the Kwasuka Theatre in Greyville during the festive season.

This is the original play on which the popular 1980’s movie was based, starring Julia Roberts, Shirley Maclaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton and Sally Field. Steel Magnolias is unashamedly the ultimate “chick flick”, performed live on stage by six of KZN’s favourite actresses.

First staged in 1987, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias is a bitter-sweet human comedy set in the deep south of America, about six very special friends bonded together despite their differences by their mutual triumphs and tragedy. Together these loveable characters survive the cycles of life, birth and death to emerge stronger, closer - and still laughing!

Greg has assembled an impressive cast to play the six delightful women so beautifully portrayed in the film. Popular actress/singer Kate Bruce is Truvy the beauty shop owner, and Carol Trench, best known as the stunning jazz vocalist at Zack’s, plays Anelle, the mousey newcomer to town. 2002 Vita winners, Vera Clare and Alison Cassels (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) play ascerbic but loveable Ouiser, and elegant widow Claire.

Filling the role that put a young Julia Roberts on the Hollywood map, is much talked about theatre newcomer, Olivia Borgen as Shelby, the strong-willed and impulsive bride-to-be. KickstArt is especially pleased to welcome ex-Durban actress Susan Monteregge back to the city, to play Shelby’s mother, M’Lynn.

Booking is through Greg on 083 544 2006 or Computicket on 011 340 8000 / 083 915 8000. Performances are Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00. There are no shows on Sunday or Monday. There are matinees on Thursday and Saturday at 15h00.

Get a party of six friends together and save on ticket prices. If you bring along five friends you get your full price ticket free (sex for the price of five). This special offer applies to advance sales or tickets bought at the door for the first two weeks of the show only (December from 3 – 14) Catering options are also available through Bean Bag Bohemia, which now runs the Kwasuka Theatre bar. Call Greg for details.
