EK'S 'N DOOS EXTENDED (article first published : 2002-10-11)

Durban audiences have clamoured for Mark Banks to extend the run of his achingly funny show Ek's 'n Doos from South Africa and he has been compelled to comply. The overwhelming response (sold out after seven days of opening) has had the producers of the show, Near Entertainment, desperately seeking an alternative available venue and it is only due to last minute negotiations that they were able to secure The Playhouse Drama for a very limited period.

Ek's n Doos from South Africa is a career culmination of South Africa's funniest one-man performer, Mark Banks. Arguably his best show to date (see review on these pages), Mark has been playing to packed audiences, both locally and abroad, since its premier in Johannesburg in January 2002. Presented by East Coast Radio and Near Entertainment, , pronounced "Exodus" and translated as "I'm an idiot", pokes fun at South Africans living abroad and offers a coconut shy of characters and situations that makes this country a satirist's smorgasbord.

Quips Mark: “Original sponsors for the production were Mrs. Chutneys Balls but due to the incredible number of South Africans pouring into Tasmania, Southern California and the Amazon Delta Basin areas the world chutney demand for London now rates fifth on the international Bullish chutney markets.

“Ex pat South African Doctor Johann Windsor of the Simba Institute is now cultural advisor but only on certain issues. The revue is presented in the traditional 17th century Umgungungwati cabaret format with silver slash and conventional state of the art empty orchestra pit - .which is now South African standard thanks to the Dept of Arts and Culture!

“Recent market research surveys carried out on English heritage trust protected sight guides gave thumbs up at a test sight near Farnborough. The show also has the endorsement of a lot of people who also give endorsements to this type of show.”

Ek's 'n Doos runs from October 22 to 27 in The Playhouse Drama. Book at Computicket – early!!
