PANSA/BBC WRITING WORKSHOPS (article first published : 2002-09-19)

Seasoned and aspiring writers nationwide are preparing for a series of radio drama workshops this month hosted by the Performing Arts Network of SA (PANSA), in association with the British Council and the BBC World Service.

The workshops will be facilitated by Marion Nancarrow, Executive Producer of World Service Drama for the BBC and Tina Pepler, an award-winning writer and top radio dramatist. They have structured the workshops around making the writing process easier and the sessions will include focus on recognising an idea and developing it, finding characters and themes, research techniques, writing scenes and writing a treatment, bringing the work to life with actors and translating the script to the recording studio.

Participants have been selected from Limpopo, North-West, Free State, Gauteng, Durban, Paarl and Cape Town.

Next month the BBC World Service and British Council launch their third collaboration on an International Radio Playwriting Competition. It is open to anyone not resident within the United Kingdom. In anticipation of this competition and other potential opportunities for writers to have their work broadcast internationally, PANSA, the British Council and the BBC World Service are offering these workshops in order to develop the requisite skills and insights among writers who may have little or no experience in writing for radio.

Writers who display real potential in the workshops may qualify for a mentoring programme by local and British writers. The South African Scriptwriters Association (SASWA) and the SABC will also be partners in these workshops.

More information from Tsitsi Chibanda at The British Council on 011 718-4329 or Tammy Ballantyne from PANSA on 0983 440-4984.
