MARK BANKS'EK'S 'N DOOS (article first published : 2002-09-14)

Well-known satirist and stand-up comic Mark Banks is always a favourite with KZN audiences. He will bring his hilarious hit show Ek's 'n Doos to Durban, after playing to packed audiences in Johannesburg, London and Cape Town.

As the publicity reads: Ek's n Doos, pronounced "Exodus" and translated as "I'm an idiot", pokes fun at South Africans living abroad and offers a coconut shy of characters and situations that makes this country a satirist's delight.

The show has been described as "a comic tour of the new South Africa" and contains numerous tongue-in-cheek digs at South African and English politicians, along with an up to the minute United Nations approved lesson on "How to be politically correct while killing people" and a look at South Africa's new telly drama Farm Murders She Wrote starring Angela Landgrab, one of Bank's personas.

Banks started his career as a solo satirical review artist in the early 80's. His first show We're Not On Top - We're Inside, brought him to the comedy stage forefront as an incisive satirical comedy voice in South Africa. Over the past two decades he has never been at a loss for words in response to current events; whether it be social, political, environmental or everyday issues.

When asked about the show's daring title and content, Banks said "We have our own unique comedy that allows us to be creative and more importantly, as South Africans we have the ability to laugh at ourselves, so it should not be taken offensively."

Ek's 'n Doos runs at The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from October 1 to 13. Book through Computicket.
