THE LIVING ROOM PROGRAMME (article first published : 2002-09-13)

Eager Artists continue to impress with their discipline and improving dramatic skills with director Jerry Pooe stretching his company’s talents in a variety of productions.

At present Eager Artists is engaged in The Living Room Programme, an exciting community project which was inspired by a programme they observed in Buffalo New York, a city they visit on an annual basis as a company in residence .

The US Living Room Programme was organised and presented by choreographer Yoshiko Chuma and the school of Hard Knocks and dance space project in New York City’s East Village. Its South African counterpart was started as a collaborative venture between the University at Buffalo Center and Eager Artists.

Supported by Pro Helvetia and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the concept is to take a production to areas where the audience numbers not more than 30 such as in private homes, old age institutions, churches and small community centres.

Performances are free and followed by discussions and a meal. Eager Artists currently offer four shows to choose from, all written and directed by Jerry Pooe. They are African Dance Journey, Pride of African Music Concert, AIDS Play and Women in Truth Commission. All shows are under an hour and the programme is available from August 30 to September 29.

The purpose of the project is to facilitate a greater understanding of the performing artists and their work through high quality, intimate experiences for participants.
