CLOUD NINE (article first published : 2002-08-18)

Drama Studies at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, are to present Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine. The play, which explores the relationship between colonisation and sexual repression, is directed by Paul Datlen, designed by Sandra Styles and performed by senior Drama Studies students.

The first act takes place somewhere in Victorian Africa and takes audiences on a roller coaster ride of the ridiculous antics and goings on of a somewhat dysfunctional colonial English family. The sexual romps are outrageous and made even more so by the gender and race of some of the characters. Betty, the wife and mother, is played by a man, the son Edward is played by a woman; Joshua, the servant "boy", is played by a white man and Harry, the great explorer, is played by a black man.

The second act takes place in contemporary London and explores the complexity and confusion of modern sexual identity.

Cloud Nine runs from September 9 to 14 at 19h30 in the Hexagon Studio Theatre on the University of Pietermaritzburg campus. Tickets R25 (R15 students) and can either be booked on 033 260-5537 from September 2 or bought at the door.

The play is not suitable for children or for those easily offended by strong language. For more information contact Paul Datlen on 033 260-5337 or email Datlen@nu.ac.za
