COLLIN NHLUMAYO MEMORIAL SERVICE (article first published : 2002-08-5)

The memorial service for Durban actor Collin Nhlumayo who died recently will take place in Room A1 at the Playhouse admin block in Acutt Street on August 6 at 13h00. More information from Deborah Cairnduff on 082 465-6032.

During his all-too-short career as an actor and playwright, Collin Nhlumayo worked with film-maker Cheryl Johnson.

“Collin had a small but vital role in my feature film The Gift which unfortunately was never completed,” says Cheryl Johnson. “We met when I auditioned literally thousands of people for various parts in the film at a casting session one gloomy Durban Sunday. He stood out immediately and got the part of the Karoo shepherd, which he played to perfection. He was a person who “worked” the camera. He was a natural and a delight to watch on film.

“Although I only worked with him once, I was stuck by his perception and compassion. I remember that he became terribly distressed when he saw how black South Africans in the small impoverished Karoo town we were shooting in, were so entirely marginalised. Their only way out was through alcohol.

“The setting was bleak and vastly removed from KwaZulu-Natal's verdant hills. It was the first time that Colin had seen the Karoo. It shocked him. This was circa 1991. He wanted to “do something” for them but knew that he couldn't. He wept like a baby one night because it weighed so heavily on him. I'll never forget it.

“I bumped into him only once after that, he told me he had hooked up with Themi and was enjoying the work enormously. I never saw him again. I had always hoped to complete my film and that all the people involved would get together and celebrate. Alas that was not to be.”
