DOWWE DOLLA DOEN DIT STAAN-STAAN! (article first published : 2002-07-1)

In Dowwe Dolla Doen Dit Staan-Staan!, currently playing at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Margit Meyer-Rodenbeck enters with her lollipop in a to-die-for sexy number and gives the audience what they came for – lots of fun. Her wit and sharp observations are immediately evident in the clever opening song. Whether it is the blonde wig, the sexy dress or the all-time-sucked-at-lollipop that provides the magic, she holds the attention of the audience as she comments on contemporary issues.

From her hilarious comparison between men and cars to her ode to a crime-free society to the tune of Yesterday, Margit keeps a fine balance between below-the-belt comments and a simple play on words. Nothing escapes her naďve to definitely-not-so-naďve commentary.

Osama Bin Laden (originally from South Africa, according to Dolla!) is seen in a totally different light. Big Brother, Joost and Amor, rugby and soccer et al gets a new meaning. The sketch on computers and “hot chatting” had the audience in stitches and so did Dolla’s first experience with the “popcorn boyfriend at the movies”.

For good and clever tickle-toe fun don’t miss Dowwe Dolla’s latest hilarious send-up. – Thomie Holtzhausen
