JANET SUZMAN AT KWASUKA (article first published : 2002-06-27)

Known to stage and cinema audiences worldwide, actress Janet Suzman returns to her former homeland to take a leading role in Heartlands, a new book by writer and poet Chris Mann which was launched at this year’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

It’s a real feather in the cap of the Kwasuka Theatre management that they were able to bring the production with Janet Suzman to Durban. Heartlands can be seen at Kwasuka Theatre on July 6 and 7 at 19h00.

A highly skilled performer, Janet Suzman has won Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her impressive and wide-ranging roles. Holding honorary degrees from four British universities, she is also an Honorary Associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a patron of the Market Theatre.

Poet and writer Chris Mann launches his new book Heartlands in a unique multi-media presentation. His poems invite readers to discover the numerous places of significance in their own lives. "Our heartlands are felt encounters with places that resonate in our memories," he says. “Such places, their people, plants and animals, contribute much to the meaning we make and find in our lives."

Huge images by artist Julia Skeen, who is married to Chris Mann, are projected onto a screen which will form the backdrop in the Kwasuka Theatre. The images incorporate the words of the poems read by Janet Suzman and Chris Mann.

Live original music by composer Christopher Cockburn will provide a moving setting for the performance.

Copies of Heartlands will be on sale at a special price of R25.

In order to allow a wider audience to enjoy the performance of Janet Suzman, Durban audiences will be on a Pay What You Can Afford basis (minimum R30). To book phone Kwasuka Theatre on 031 309-2236.
