ECR HA HA COMEDY SHOWCASE (article first published : 2002-06-9)

Six of the best comedians from South Africa and abroad are set to make Durban audiences shake with laughter during The East Coast Radio Ha Ha Comedy Festival which runs in the Playhouse Opera from June 25 to July 7.

Audiences will remember the show’s host, Russell Peters, an Indian comedian from Canada who appeared in the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival in Cape Town in 2001. Russell is known for his cheeky brand of comedy, which is rude without being offensive. A definite “lad”, without alienating the female section of the audience, he draws on his Asian roots and explores attitudes towards race in a way that is fresh, often surprising and unafraid of hitting hard. While controversial at times, he avoids being senselessly derogatory, and combines his observations with a likeable stage persona and cheeky grin. This combination of comedy assets has made many a critic declare Russell the world's leading Indian stand up comic.

Special guest is Greer Barnes from the USA. "Greer Barnes, big, black, bold and American, had a style flavoured with topical material and murmurings from his diary of hob-knobbing with the Eddie Murphies and Bill Clintons of the world. With a busy international circuit, Greer still manages to master several local accents wherever he is playing, drawing all audiences towards him with his warmth and relaxed charm. Whilst spending a couple of months in England last year he successfully played such esteemed venues as The Comedy Store, The Comedy Café and Jongleurs.

The two international visitors are joined by four local acts - top South African comedians Kurt Schoenraad (Cape Town), Mel Miller (Johannesburg), Martin Jonas (Johannesburg) and Cokey Fallow (Cape Town).

Sponsors East Coast Radio and producers NEAR Entertainment - producers of the award winning Smirnoff Comedy Festival - wish to increase their comedy footprint in the Durban region and are looking to make this premier comedy event a highlight on the Durban calendar!

Catch The East Coast Ha Ha Comedy Festival at the Playhouse Opera from 25 June until 7 July. Booking is through Computicket or Dial A Seat on 031 369-9555. Performances Tuesday until Saturday at 20h15 and Sundays 18h00. Tickets R67.50 throughout (R50 Sunday).
