COMEDY OF ERRORS (article first published : 2002-05-21)

Following the success of last year’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Drama and Performance Studies programme (University of Natal Durban), with the generous support of FNB Vita, will present Shakespeare’s hilarious The Comedy of Errors as the culmination of the FNB Vita/UND Shakespeare Educational Festival 2002.

The Comedy of Errors is delightfully farce and furious, full of mistaken identities, mishaps, miscommunications and mayhem. Transposed into the vibrant KZN/Durban context, the play is given a new and local look that celebrates both the fun of Shakespeare’s original play and the myriad cultures and subcultures of our unique city and region.

According to the directors Mervyn McMurtry and Tamar Meskin, “relocating Shakespeare’s characters to a locale with a distinct eThekweni quality has enabled us to create a theatrical style and context that will resonate with audiences, while capturing all the vivid characters, broad humour and comic situations inherent in the text”.

Stimulated by the recent explosion of interest in Durban as a cultural hotspot – with a host of new dance works, theatre pieces, exhibitions, operas, etc. – and exploring many parallel contemporary issues of Durban and Africa, this production speaks with the voice of young South Africa and hits the stage with extraordinary life and vigour.

Featuring a multicultural cast, a local and colourful setting, contemporary music and vibrant costumes, this is a production sure to thrill all the senses and have audiences pulsing to the beat and rhythm of Durban life in all its marvellous variety.

The production runs at the Pieter Scholtz Open Air Theatre, University of Natal (Durban) from May 23 to June 1, nightly at 18h00 with matinees at 14h00 on May 25 and June 1. Tickets R15 (R10 students and scholars) booked through Claudette Wagner at 031 260-32134 between 08h00 and 13h00 or via e-mail at wagnerc1@nu.ac.za Tickets also available from 17h00 on the night of each performance.
