CORRECTED AUDITION NOTICE (article first published : 2002-05-17)

Casting agent Peter Gardner of Troubadour Productions has the task of finding two young principal characters for a film titled Beat the Drum directed by RJ Visciglia (Touched by an Angel) provisionally to be shot in Gauteng and KZN from June 10 for four weeks.

The part of Musa requires a Zulu-speaking thin and wiry 10 year-old child or an older child of similar build able to pass for this age. Musa is a bright country boy whose parents have died of AIDS. Previously in the care of his grandmother, he finds himself in a position of having to fend for himself. He is forced to leave his village and is picked up by a truck driver who takes him to the city where his inner resilience and determination help him to survive. He must be appealing and attractive, but believable. His is the story of thousands of African children who survive on the city streets against incredible odds.

The other part is that of Lati Kamuzu, a young girl who hangs out with a street gang and eventually becomes Musa’s friend. A bit of a loner, she keeps her distance from the gang when it suits her. She is a survivor and fairly cynical but holds onto the promise she made to her mother to value her virginity.

As the film will be released internationally, both parts require a good command of English with neutral clear accents.

Auditions will take place at Troubadour Productions, 286 Jan Smuts Highway, on May 21 and 22. It is essential to call Peter Gardner to book an audition time on 031 209-2817 or 083 225-7934.
