OTHELLO FOR BARDíS BIRTHDAY (article first published : 2002-04-19)

The date of April 23, 2002, marks the 438th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare. To celebrate the occasion, the Actors Co-operative will present a gala performance of their current production Othello. Directed by Vita-award winner Garth Anderson, it features a strong professional cast.

The title role is played by one of Durbanís most exciting young talents, Joel Zuma who recently impressed audiences with his performance as Salieri in a season of Amadeus at the Playhouse. He recently appeared in Jay Patherís groundbreaking Cityscapes.

Clare Mortimer, who will be remembered for her finely-drawn performance as Lady Macduff in the Co-opís Macbeth, plays the doomed Desdemona. Chris Marcellin is Iago with Vita winners Belinda Harward as Emilia and Peter Court as Brabantio.

Also in the cast is Olivia Borgen, recently seen in Keely and Du, Edward Berridge, Rowan Bartlett who played the title role in Amadeus and Garth Anderson as the Duke of Venice.

The play is performed on a simple but full set in the thrust stage shape, with audience on three sides. This is exactly as the audience would have experienced the play when performed in Shakespeareís day. Costumes have been designed by Peter Court.

The Co-op will perform Othello for a short season on April 25 and 26 at the Durban High School auditorium, well-known as the venue for the Not The Grahamstown Festival. Performances take place at 09h00 and 12h00 daily. Pietermaritzburg and Midlands schools will be able to see the play in the Hilton College Theatre on April 29 at 12h00 and 19h30 and on April 30 at 12h00 and 21h00.

Othello is a setwork for both the IEB and Government schools this year. Schools and other organisations interested in booking a performance should contact Garth Anderson on 083 439-1532. Book early to avoid disappointment.
