DEATH OF ANNE BUTT (article first published : 1999-09-5)

A former leading figure on Durbanís theatre scene, Anne Butt, died at the end of last month. She made a major impact on the local amateur dramatics scene in Durban during the 1960ís and 1970ís. A strong actress and director she appeared in and directed productions at the Old Lyric Theatre, the Alhambra (when it operated as a theatre) and the St Johnís Theatre (headquarters of the St Johnís Ambulance) in Old Fort Road.

She was associated with productions such as Man About the House, Intent to Murder, Relative Values, Iíll Get My Man and The Sound of Murder as well as Goodnight, Mrs Puffin, Murder Without Crime and the highly acclaimed Trap for a Lonely Man at St Johnís which featured Eddie Winship, David Randle, Jean Anne Gunthorpe, Marjorie Nichols and Peter Turner.

Her last major appearance was in An Inspector Calls staged by the Durban Theatre Workshop Company at the City Centre Theatre (formerly situated in Kings Hall). Directed by David Randle, it featured Peter Larlham, Caroline Smart, ĒChakaĒ Hallowes, Chris Voysey and David Coolbear.
