ASSITEJ CONFERENCE (article first published : 2002-01-24)

Durban will host an African regional meeting including countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda, Swaziland, Morocco and others. These countries are already affiliates for the Assitej International (International Theatre for Children and Young People) and each country has its national centre.

The meeting will take place from February 13 to 17 2002 at the Protea Hotel Sea Board. February 14 is the date set aside to focus on South Africa.

South Africa is frequently invited to international conferences and festivals in Africa and overseas. Unfortunately, there has been no proper communication with South African delegates mainly because of a lack of resources.

Durban Arts Associationís community officer, Brenda Toko was invited to a festival in Sweden in April 2001. On hearing that the next meeting for Africa will be in Zimbabwe, she made an appeal that this should take place in South Africa in Durban. This would make it easier to invite people working in childrenís theatre in South Africa to come together and discuss how they can become involved. Two people from each province will be present. Delegates were selected from the National Community Theatre for Education and Developmentís list.

Invited guests will be the National Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ben Ngubane, National Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Dr Wally Serote and representatives from the BAT Centre, Playhouse Company and the Durban Arts Association.

Brenda Toko of Durban Arts Association will organise the meeting with Durban Artsí sanction and support.

The meeting will also discuss a Theatre for Children Congress to take place in Seoul, Korea later this year in which South Africa should take part. More details from Brenda on 031 312-1236.
