THE ALICE PROJECT (article first published : 2002-01-24)

The idea of a physical theatre residency was started last year with the Cape-Town based company From the Hip and it was a fabulous success. For a week the Grade 10 Drama students are taken through an intensive five-day course of technical and creative physical theatre and movement classes, in conjunction with workshops and video lectures. Their week's work culminates in a work in progress performance in The Theatre of the material they have generated through the week.

The idea behind the residency is to inject an appreciation of movement and alternative performance styles at the beginning of their three-year senior phase, and to develop their skills in the creation of movement vocabulary and their technical ability.

Physical Theatre is a performance style that embraces many different forms from basic movement and dance to acrobatics, mime, acting and song. It develops from the students' basic physical abilities and challenges them to extend themselves, rather than trying to impose form onto them.

“The success of last year’s residency and the amazing response from the community for the allied performance programme in The Theatre has enabled us to repeat the project this year. We hope it will continue to be an annual event in the school,” says representative Mike Wiblin.

All performances start at 19h30. The Alice Project promises to be a great show and is appropriate for all senior school pupils and the general public.
