WHITE TRASH (article first published : 2001-12-30)

Groundbreaking playwright and director Shireen James’s new play is what she describes as “unashamedly stereotypical“.

White Trash embodies all the clichés of a poor, dysfunctional and disillusioned couple Poppie (Monique Hebrard) and Morne (Brad Watt). Klipdrift and coke flow in abundance and serve to lubricate the mechanisms of abuse which, ironically, have held the couple together for so long.

Morne has been retrenched and wiles away his time in front of the TV and behind a brandy bottle. His growing insecurities have heightened his jealous suspicions and on top of this he sees an old mate of his on “People Of The South”. This proves too much for Morne and his frustrations and resentments stream forth in a volley of swear words and song.

Poppie stands her ground and reminds him of their shattered dreams. Were it not for Morne’s’ sense of humour and the couple’s obvious symbiotic connection, the action could easily have degenerated into just another domestic statistic of disaster. As it is, though, the show ends on a high note of future promises.

While the dialogue is delivered with realistic intention, the songs, which are all lip-synched, lift the show to a surreal dimension. Songs include numbers from Rodriguez, Alanis Morrisette, van Morrison, Macy Gray, The Rolling Stones and many more.

White Trash will run at Blu at 226 Stamford Hill Road every Wednesday at 20h00 until the end of January. Tickets R30 booked through 072 223-3475.
