MENíS NIGHT (article first published : 2001-11-18)

After successful runs at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Natal Witness Hilton Arts Festival and a recent critically-acclaimed season in Cape Town, Men's Night at last comes to Durban. It will run from November 27 to December 22 in the Square Space Theatre on the campus of the University of Natal.

This new one-man show is written and performed by Ben Voss who is also well-known for his performances in The Final Cut, Foul Play, War Cry and Seeing Red. He is the winner of this year's FNB Durban Vita award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Twelfth Night.

Directed by multi-award winning director Greig Coetzee (White Men with Weapons and Breasts), Men's Night poses the question: When are South African men truly men? The first time they orgasm, have sex, get a jobÖ get married? From bedrooms to boardrooms to brothels and boarding schools, the play explores the persona of confused and insecure white South African males.

In Menís Night, Ben Voss has assembled a rich collage of male South Africans: the sex-struck schoolboy, the broken father, the misguided yuppie, the small town boilermaker, and others - giving insight into the insecurity, vulnerability and confusion that comes with being a white man in South Africa. Especially now, when the model for masculinity keeps changing. Has the South African male had the rug pulled from under his feet, or has he learned to dance on a shifting carpet?

Shows are nightly at 19h30 from Tuesday until Saturday and 18h30 on Sundays. Tickets R35 (R25 for pensioners and students only for Tuesday performances) and block booking discounts are available. Book through Computicket on 011 340-8000 or 083 915-8000. Or phone Ben Voss direct on 083 555-1885.

NB: The show does contain explicit language so is best suited for adult audiences.
