COMEDY UNDERGROUND (article first published : 2001-11-14)

Grevyille’s popular night spot barGO in association with East Coast Radio will present Durban's first taste of The Comedy Underground from November 22 to 25 featuring some of the freshest and funniest sets ever delivered.

Six months ago, local comedy changed forever. Natalie Hadlow, manager of both John Vlismas and Bevan Cullinan decided that watching the same comedians repeat the same material night after night was as much fun as “watching the ANC and NNP make a baby”. She convinced the two to start up what has become the most loved and respected alternative comedy venue in Gauteng.

Anyone may perform. There is a solid no-audition and no-censorship policy. For well-known comics or first-timers, the rules remain the same. They only have five minutes and they may not use any material they’ve used before.

With John Vlismas' hard-edged and wacky improvisation and Bevan Cullinan's crazy physical comedy a stage was born to nurture and encourage the most experimental humour this country has yet seen. The results were overwhelming. Exciting new talent was discovered and the venue was packed to capacity every night with hundreds of people being turned away.

Joining John Vlismas and Bevin Cullinan at barGO’s Comedy Underground will be Brendan Jack, Duncan Harling, Jeteesh Kathawaroo, Rob Fridjhon and Kevin Perkins. A further name still has to be confirmed.

Doors open at 19h00 and the show starts at 20h30. Tickets R50 plus service charge from TicketWeb or R50 clear at the door
