LOW PRICE SEATS FOR EARNEST (article first published : 2001-10-21)

For Oscar Wilde fans on a low budget, there is a chance to see KickstArt’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest at the Square Space Theatre, University of Natal, on October 24 and 25 at two special low-price performances. On these nights, patrons can have tickets by arriving at the theatre from an hour prior to the start of the show and making a donation in the Pay-What-You-Can Box. The show starts at 19h30 and box office is open from 18h30. This offer applies to door sales only as pre-booking through Computicket will be at the full price.

Greg King and his KickstArt production company will stage this much-loved period classic in the round featuring the cream of KZN’s performers. Produced by Greg King, and directed and edited by Garth Anderson, the production features Greg as Jack, Belinda Harward as Gwendolen, Richard Swift as Algernon, Stacey Taylor as Cecily, Garth Anderson as the Rev Chasuble, Alison Cassils as Miss Prism, Peter Court as Merriman the Butler, Peter Taylor as Lane the Manservant and Vera Claire as in the always coveted role of Lady Bracknell.

Of his most famous play, Wilde himself wrote "It is exquisitely trivial, a delicate bubble of fancy, and it has its philosophy…that we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality."

The Importance of Being Earnest runs in the Square Space Theatre at the University of Natal from October 23. There are special concessions for pensioners, students and scholars and weekend matinee performances.
