OUT OF BOUNDS COMES HOME! (article first published : 1999-08-18)

After remarkably successful seasons at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the award-winning play, Out of Bounds comes home for a season at the Playhouse’s Sanlam Loft from September 2 to 18. This delightful solo piece, written and performed by Rajesh Gopie, is directed and edited by Tina Johnson who hails from New York and was also the directorial force behind Lueen Conning’s highly successful play, A Coloured Place.

Out of Bounds tells of the trials and tribulations as well as the joys and humiliations of growing up in a working class family in Phoenix and Inanda. Delivering a riveting performance in which he plays more than 25 characters, Rajesh weaves a fascinating tale (see review on this website). The play is a thematic development of his Inside Out, which he performed at the Playhouse’s Amagugu Drama Festival last year. He also appeared in the superb international drama Mahatma v/s Gandhi as well as in Ronnie Govender’s Back to the Faith.

Winner of the Johannesburg FNB Vita Award for Best Production for the fourth quarter, Out of Bounds has just been honoured with several nominations for the annual Johannesburg FNB Vita Awards including best script and best lead actor. After recently performing an extract from the play for Nelson Mandela at the opening of the Gandhi Exhibition at Museum Africa in Johannesburg, Rajesh Gopie was approached by Nadine Gordimer to perform the whole play at Mandela’s official residence. Plans are underway for a tour of India and Europe.

Tickets R25 at Computicket, or Dial-A-seat on (031) 369 9444 or Ticketline (after hours) on (031) 304 2753. For special discounted schools and pensioners performances as well as sold performances, please call Nanjini or Mala on (031) 369 9446/8.
