FESTIVAL OF NEW WRITING (article first published : 2001-10-9)

As part of its commitment to the development and stimulation of theatre in Durban and South Africa, the Drama and Performance Studies programme, University of Natal (Durban), presents the first annual Festival of New Writing from October 11 to 19 at the Square Space Theatre. The Festival comprises a number of new works written or adapted by young local writers from a variety of contexts in a variety of styles and offers the unique opportunity for Durban audiences to catch a sneak preview of the theatrical voices of the future.

Vuka Afrika! Vuka Antigone! relocates Sophoclesí classic Greek tragedy Antigone in the state of Azania in Africa, where the people are restless, unhappy and dying. Resistance movements have arisen to challenge the state and civil unrest is rife. Written and directed by ZoŽ Parker, whose previous works include the critically acclaimed Hooters and Stop at Green, Go at Red, this uniquely African and highly topical version of the Greek classic features a large and talented young cast. It also offers a challenge to fight complacency with its probing exploration of many of the current issues of South Africa including HIV/AIDS, corruption, greed and power.

Other events at the Festival including Ms. Fits (October 1 to 13 at 18h00), directed by Candice Pankhurst which she adapted from the screenplay she wrote with Sacha Stokes as an entry into the MNet Edit Competition. New Voices 1 & 2 (October 18 and 19 at 18h00) comprise two evenings of original one-act plays presented as staged readings.

Bookings via Claudette Wagner between 08h30 and 13h00 on (031) 260-3134 or fax (031) 260-1410 or e-mail: wagnerc1@nu.ac.za
