POLLOCK AND THE XMAS HOLLY (article first published : 2001-10-2)

Written by Shireen James and featuring Angela Hawkes Pollock and the Xmas Holly will run for a further season for four nights only from October 4 to 7 (see review in Drama)

Angela Hawkes (currently also performing in Comin’ Atcha) plays Holly Crouzier - a failed actress determined to reclaim the stage, believing it her rightful place. As she puts it, this is an area “…magically transformed from a few meters squared of inconsequential floor space to a carpet complete with woven text of script after script…”

The drunken outburst of an ex-boyfriend put a premature ending to Hollys’ career- that is until she grabbed an unforeseen opportunity to seek revenge. She likens her bold move back onto the performance platform to Jackson Pollock’s intentional disregard for the conventional confines of the two-dimensional pictorial plane.

This is a play within a play. The plot unfolds with humour, tragedy and pathos and a blatant disregard for traditional delivery. An instinctive desire for meaning and a sense of closure give way to the literally and metaphorically splashed and dribbled layers of chaos and insanity.

Pollock was arguably the forefather of American Modernism. His passion and almost choreographed ballet across the canvas is echoed in a performance that draws the audience into a web of private and universal exploration. Paint flies in all directions and mingles with the sweat and tears and blood of the performer.

This show is age restricted (no under 16’s) and the audience is warned to expect the unexpected.

Pollock and the Xmas Holly runs at the Square Space Theatre at the University of Natal, Durban campus. Booking is through Computicket or phone 072 223-3475. Tickets at the door.
