MARVELLOUS MIXTURES (article first published : 2001-09-22)

The Coffee Stain Theatre Co will present what they describe as “an explosive new piece of Imaginative Children's Theatre” this morning (September 22) at 11h15 at The Natal Witness Hilton Art Festival.

Inspired loosely by a popular Roald Dahl story, Marvellous Mixtures follows the adventures of a lonely boy, Mathew Pampoenpip, who is abandoned on a small Karoo farm with his nasty old Granny, Ouma Lemoenlippe. The magic and mayhem begins when young Mathew mixes his own magic brew to cure his nasty Grunion of a Granny. Things don’t quite go according to young Mathew's plan when Granny begins to grow....and grow....and grow....!

Director, performer and writer Neil Coppen has created a visual fireworks display, employing a vast range of masks, mime and puppetry. Together with the effervescent Kasia Stempowski, he brings to life a zany array of characters from the neurotic farmyard chickens, to Mathew's 800 storey Ouma, who literally shoots towards the sky before the audience's very eyes! The magical stage effects and the non-stop laughs will entertain youngsters of all ages.

After its performance at the Hilton Festival, the hour-long show will embark on a countrywide tour. Marvellous Mixtures is expected to appear at the Kwasuka Theatre towards the end of the year.
