STEVEN SUCCEEDS (article first published : 2001-09-4)

Steven Stead, winner of the Durban Regional Vita award for best actor for his role in Hamlet, studied drama at the University of Natal, Durban. He got his first acting role at 12 when he played Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh for Napac.

Now based in London he is to direct the Marriage of Figaro for the English National Opera. His brother Rory is designing the costumes for the production, and Farley Whitfield, now based in New York, the lighting. All three developed a “taste” for greasepaint with Bluff Drama during their school days.

Formerly working as a resident director with the English National Opera company, he is now freelance and was delighted to be asked by them to direct a new production of the Marriage of Figaro and then La Traviata.

The Marriage of Figaro is to be staged in London’s West End Coliseum Theatre, their biggest theatre. A 2,300-seater, its productions are filled to an 80% capacity nightly.
