RUNNING RIOT (article first published : 2001-04-29)

NBS in association with Space-Kids presents Paul Slabolepszy’s new play Running Riot which opens on May 29 at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban before it tours to Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

The production is staged by Space Kids - Paul Slabolepszy and Bill Flynn - the same dynamic team that produced the smash hit Heel Against the Head. Whereas "Heel" celebrated the 1995 World Cup Rugby, Running Riot focuses on the Comrades Marathon and veteran runner and Comrades winner Bruce Fordyce has acted as technical advisor.

In order to win a R1,000 bet off a rival in Phalaborwa, Crispin Wentzel (Paul) has entered the 2001 Comrades much against the advice of his mate Tjokkie Hetherington (Bill) who he has roped in to be his second. More interested in fishing in Durban and the rugby, Tjokkie is naively of the belief that all a “second” has to do is drive a bakkie to Drummond with a couple of energy drinks in the back!

The trouble starts when Crispin falls for a gorgeous Russian athlete and despite Tjokkie’s reminders of what happened "at the Rugby World Cup" when Crispin’s wife arrived in a similar situation, Crispin’s testosterone levels are in top gear. Tests for “banned substances” and an ex-KGB lover boy provide further chaos for the two In their tatty beachfront hotel.

There is a special performance on May 30 for the Comrades Marathon Association official charities. Tickets are R65 and the proceeds will go to four charities. There is also a show on June 16 at 21h00 for all those runners "desperately looking for a way to wind down" after the race.

There are special fundraisers on May 29 at 19h30 (Kearsney College); May 30 at 19h30 (Comrades Marathon Official Charities); May 31 at 19h30 (Rotary Club of Durban Umgeni); June 1 at 19h30 (Association for the Learning Disabled); June 3 at 18h00 (Hillcrest High Supporters Club); June 6 at at 19h30 (Knights of da Gama); June 7 at 19h30 (Kloof Tennis Club). For relevant phone numbers contact Versfeld & Associates on (031) 303-9066.

Otherwise booking is through Ticketweb on 0861 400 500 or online at www.ticketweb.co.za
