MSOMI WOWS GLOBE (article first published : 2001-04-21)

A perfect example of how Shakespeare’s work is all-embracing and highly valued in all walks of life is the current success of Welcome Msomi’s adaptation of the Bard’s Macbeth which recently performed at London’s Globe Theatre. The venue is a faithful copy of the theatre in Shakespeare’s time.

Umabatha (the Zulu Macbeth) forms part of the current Celebrate South Africa festival in London. The production first hit London way back in the 1970’s under the auspices of Professor Elizabeth Sneddon, director Pieter Scholtz and with the support of the University of Natal Durban’s drama department. It has lost none of its energy, verve and humour since those first performances at the Aldwych Theatre – as evidenced by the cheering response from its current London audience – many of whom stood in the amphitheatre in the rain for the two-hour performance.
