SEEING RED (article first published : 2001-04-21)

International award-winner, Greig Coetzee, has written a new play Ė his biggest, most ambitious project to date - entitled Seeing Red which is being produced by The Playhouse Company, where it will premiere on May 15.

The play is set in a student digs in Pietermaritzburg in 1986. Itís a "Natal" story that speaks intimately of this place and its people. Although the political climate of the time is an integral part of the play, according to Coetzee, it isnít an issue-based piece or a vehicle for a political statement.

"Itís a love triangle, a coming-of-age story, an exploration of the South African identity, and an ironic look at the madness of the eighties from the distance of this new century,Ē he explains. ďThis is about young people in a turbulent South Africa. Itís about their hopes and fears, their lusts and loves, the things they make, the things they break and the things they smoke."

In the cast are well-known actors Ben Voss, Sarahleigh Castelyn, Belinda Harward, Teboho Hlahane and John van de Ruit. Set and costume design is by Greg King.

Seeing Red runs in the Playhouse Drama from May 15 to 27. Book at TicketWeb outlets or online at www.ticketweb.co.za or call 0861 400 500.
