SAVE THE SYSTEM (article first published : 1999-07-20)

SOSS (Save our Solar System), an exciting new play for children, marks another co-operative venture between the KwaSuka Theatre and Technikon Natal's department of drama studies. Written and directed by Jacky Vermaas, head of drama at Technikon, the show is designed by Hugo le Roux who currently holds the post of dance lecturer there. Another lecturer in the department, Debbie Lutge, plays the leading roles of Arian and Tic, the twin sisters who live on the moon while Portia Gumede, who graduated in 1998, plays a celestial bag lady called Nowhere.

Other students featured in the cast are Thabo Godide and Bryan Hiles, both currently in their second year of study at the Technikon. Professor Dennis Schauffer from the University of Durban-Westville completes the cast as Space Degrader, a secret agent from earth.

SOSS has a strong ecological message about pollution and looking after the planet on which we live and is a must for all children from six to 60. It is informal educational theatre in the true sense of the word. The actual text of the play is full of snippets of information relevant to the geography and English syllabus. With OBE (outcome based education) being latest buzzword in schools, informal educational productions are a must for all scholars to enjoy learning and at the same time identify the information presented to them and apply it across the curriculum.

Performances are at the KwaSuka Theatre, Stamford Hill Road, Greyville every Saturday afternoon from August 7 at 14h30. Booking through Computicket or at the theatre on 309-2236.
