EGOLI – CITY OF GOLD (article first published : 1999-07-20)

The University of Durban-Westville drama department’s production of Egoli is dedicated to the memory of Matsemela Manaka, well-known playwright and director who lost his life in a car accident on July 25 last year. Manaka’s Egoli – City of Gold was a great success as a two-hander both in South Africa and in London. The play follows the life of two mineworkers living in the hostel of a male worker’s compound acted by students Errol Sibiya and Charles Ntokozo Radebe. The play was recently performed at the 1999 Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

“Apart from the fact that Manaka creates a very specific synergy between the two male characters, their being away from home and their families binds them together even more,” reported Paul Bookooi, Cue guest writer in Grahamstown. “It is a piece which relies very strongly on its physical dynamic. Both Sibiya and Radebe don’t shy away from it. Robin Singh’s direction takes care that it is brought over in stunning realism: naturally and with a minimum of fuss. The two actors’ effortless way in which they move, jump and fall to the ground gives this production an edge on many others that are far more obviously choreographed.”

The play is expected to run at the Asoka Theatre at UDW in mid August. Phone Dr Kriben Pillay on 204-4628 for details.
