MADCAPS WATER STORIES (article first published : 2001-04-5)

The Madcaps theatre company is back on the road with two new schools' touring programmes: The Rainwoman and Other Stories for junior primary and The Silver Stream for senior primary and junior high schools.

The stories for the younger learners are full of the ingredients that children love best. The title story is an exciting adventure in which two young friends outsmart the fire man and wake up the sleepy rainwoman. There is a naughty monkey who learns a valuable lesson about caring, a crazy pair of twins who get up to all sorts of tricks and a charming tale about a boy called Ningi Maningi who saves his village from drought. There are lots of opportunities for participation too!

The Silver Stream follows the journey of Lahliwe, the abandoned one, into the mountains to find and appease the spirit of water and so bring the river back to her community. Her moving story is interwoven with carefully selected water legends, told by the most unexpected and fascinating characters!

Both productions are lively and rich with theatrical devices: masks, music, rhythm, movement and mime. Whilst the accent is on entertainment, there is the important underlying message: water is precious!

This year founder members of Madcaps, Wendy Nell and Gisele Turner, are joined by the talented and versatile actor Michael Gritten, winner of the FNB Vita Best Actor award in 2000 for his performance in Popcorn.

Schools interested in booking the productions can contact Cecile Bergmans on (031) 464-5588.
