HELLUVAGUY!!! (article first published : 2001-04-3)

Yesterday afternoon I witnessed one of those rare and all-too-short moments of theatre, watching an actor perfectly at ease with his craft presenting a performance that was riveting from start to finish.

The performance came from one of Sweden’s top actors Lennart R Svensson and the production was the hour-long Helluvaguy!!! currently on tour on South Africa.

Written and directed by Agneta Elers-Jarleman, who introduced the show, and presented by the Klara Soup Theatre of the Stockholm City Theatre, Helluvaguy!!! is brought to South Africa by the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Society of South Africa.

This internationally acclaimed comic one-hander looks at the life and loves of Auguste Strindberg, probably Sweden's best-known theatre personality.

Lennart Svensson takes on the persona of Strindberg and talks about his life from a childhood intimidated by a tyrant of a father to the time of his relationships with his three wives. A quick flick of a highly versatile head of hair, a simple body movement or a flick of his greatcoat and each female individual is clearly drawn. A very fine performance.

Helluvaguy!!! features nicely-positioned and atmospheric music by Gunnar Edander, one of Sweden's leading composers of film and theatre music.

There is one more performance in KZN this evening (April 3) - at the Hilton College Theatre at 19h30. You’ll be sorry if you miss it.

Tickets R10 (R5 students, scholars and OAP’s on presentation of appropriate ID). Block booking concessions at R5 pp for groups of 10 or more. Book at Computicket or at the door. – Caroline Smart
