OTHELLO (article first published : 2001-03-29)

Since its inception, Kwasuka has been synonymous with high quality productions of school networks. In 2000, Hamlet and A Man for All Seasons played to almost 20,000 matric pupils in KZN.

This year, Kwasuka starts its production schedule with Shakespeare’s Othello, assembling a talented company with director Jacky Vermaas in charge of production.

In the title role is University of Natal Durban honours graduate Rakau Boikanyo, last seen in Durban in the award-winning War Cry. Rakau will be giving his last performance in Durban before leaving for the United States where he is to take up a scholarship to study drama at Chicago University.

Iago will be played by Chris Hurst, a newcomer to Kwasuka who is currently a lecturer in drama at the University of Natal Durban. He comes to Durban via Zimbabwe and London where he garnered vast theatrical experience both as an actor and a director. Others in the cast include Dennis Schauffer, Catherine Mace, Mari Visagie, Ben Voss, Bryan Hiles and Clinton Marion.

Othello runs at Port Natal High School from March 26 to April 5 with two shows daily for schools. There are two public performances on March 30 and 31 at 19h30. Book via Kwasuka on 309-2236.
