HELLUVAGUY!!! (article first published : 2001-03-21)

Helluvaguy!!! is a funny, touching one-man show about writer August Strindberg by a respected theatre company from Sweden. Soon to tour to theatres in Gauteng and KZN, this internationally-acclaimed comic one-hander looks at the life and loves of what is probably Sweden's best-known theatre personality.

Originally created as a lunch-hour piece for Stockholm office-workers, the 45-minute show is consciously accessible and appealing to a theatre-going public who may not have any particular knowledge or understanding of Strindberg or his work.

Helluvaguy!!! is told in a subtle blend of words and music performed by two of Sweden’s hottest talents. Actor Lennart R Svensson (August Strindberg) is known for his portrayal of both tragic and comic roles and is much in demand for cinema and television work. Composer and musician Gunnar Edander is one of Sweden's leading composers of film and theatre music. He has created music for over 100 of Sweden's most popular plays and musical theatre productions.

Helluvaguy!!!, which is written and directed by Agneta Elers-Jarleman, is presented by the Klara Soup Theatre of the Stockholm City Theatre and brought to South Africa by the Embassy of Sweden in association with the Swedish Society of South Africa. The show had its premiere at Stockholm City Theatre in 1992 and was an immediate success with press and public alike. Eight years on, the production is still running and has toured the Nordic countries, central and eastern Europe, as well as Scotland, Greece, USA, Zimbabwe and Bosnia.

There are two performances in KZN: at the Square Space Theatre on the University of Natal: Durban on April 2 at 13h15 and the Hilton College Theatre on April 3 at 19h30. Both performances will be followed by a discussion.

Tickets R10 (R5 students, scholars and OAP’s on presentation of appropriate ID) are extensively subsidised by the Embassy of Sweden to make the production affordable for those interested. Block booking concessions at R5 pp for groups of 10 or more. Booking: Computicket, at the door, credit cards on (031) 304-2753 or online at http//www.computicket.com. Quoted prices exclude Computicket surcharge.
